In March 2007, the board of directors for the Belmont County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities voted unanimously to drop “mental retardation” from the name. This decision was made after much discussion and feedback from parents, individuals, agencies, other stakeholders and the public. In the end, the choice was clear. Everyone who emailed, called, or wrote supported dropping the term because of the way it is perceived in society today. We believe our new name is now more in line with who we serve.
